In a residential complex there is not only apartments but also the necessary infrastructure: shopping facilities for daily needs (socialist department store , today known as a supermarket ), crèche and kindergarten , polyclinic (today medical center with practices of all disciplines, x-ray department and pharmacy) and schools (elementary and High school). Each residential complex can function like an independent, self-contained municipality. The major traffic axes lead around the outside of the residential complexes. These are accessed through side streets into the residential complexes. Only local public transport is permitted as through traffic.

The residential complexes I to III in Neuruppin are a prime example of these GDR residential and settlement areas.
