Wojciech Witkowski

Wojciech Witkowski (* 1946) is a Polish legal historian , emeritus full professor at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin , Faculty of Law and Administrative Science, former holder of the Chair of Legal and State History and Director of the Institute for History and Theory of state and law.

He specializes in the legal history of the Duchy of Warsaw and Congress Poland . He studied law and history at Maria Curie Skłodowska University. His doctoral thesis (1977) read: "Sądownictwo administracyjne w Królestwie Polskim 1815-1867" (The administrative judiciary in the Kingdom of Poland 1815-1867). The habilitation: "Komisja Rządowa Sprawiedliwości w Królestwie Polskim 1815–1876" (The Government Commission of Justice in the Kingdom of Poland 1815–1876) (1986). He received a full professorship for law in 2002. An important one was his book on 19th century Polish lawyers: “Aleksander This i Jan Kanty Wołowski. Wybitni prawnicy Królestwa Polskiego ”(Aleksander This and Jan Kanty Wołowski. Outstanding Lawyers of the Kingdom of Poland) (2001).

At first he worked under the direction of Professor Józef Mazurkiewicz . He took over the management of the chair after Professor Artur Korobowicz in 2008. In 2016 he handed over the management of the chair to Andrzej Wrzyszcz .

In the last period of his academic work he deals with the history of administration. He wrote the textbook: “Historia administracji w Polsce 1764–1989” (The administrative history in Poland 1764–1989) (1st edition 2007) and a number of articles, e.g. E.g. "The Beginnings of Penal Fiscal Law - the Prussian Model and its Transformations in the Warsaw Duchy and in the Kingdom of Poland until the Sixties of the 19th c."
