Wolfdieter Haas

Wolfdieter Haas (born March 6, 1921 in Karlsruhe ) is a German medieval historian.

Life

Haas studied history and received his doctorate in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1949 ( studies on the relations of the Curia to countries and empires in the 9th century, with a special focus on relations with the East ). He then went to Rome for a study visit. In 2002 he published a book about the High Middle Ages (about the decisive epochal change around 1200 according to Haas), the history of the Pope in the 11th and 12th centuries, Friedrich Barbarossa and Heinrich the Lion.

He lives in Ramelsloh-Seevetal near Hamburg. His main occupation was a businessman and manager of a wine trade.

In 2006 he received the Brothers Grimm Medal from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences for his research on the Middle Ages.
