Wolfgang Bothe

Wolfgang Bothe (born January 9, 1952 in Magdeburg ; † May 11, 1980 in Halberstadt ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Wolfgang Bothe tried to flee to the Federal Republic of Germany as early as 1971 and served a prison sentence after the failed attempt to escape. On April 7, 1980 he made a new attempt to escape near Veltheim am Fallstein . In doing so, he triggered a self-shot system . With serious injuries, including in his brain, he was taken to the Halberstadt district hospital. There was a spastic paralysis of the left side. Finally, after a month in hospital, he died of cardiovascular failure on May 11, 1980.

In a trial for the death of Bothe and five other escape victims who died as a result of self-firing systems or the use of firearms, the responsible former members of the National Defense Council of the GDR were sentenced to four and a half to seven and a half years imprisonment for inciting manslaughter.
