Wolfgang Geier (historian)

Wolfgang Geier (* 1937 ) is a German historian.

Life

Geier studied philosophy, sociology and cultural history at the University of Jena and the University of Leipzig , where he completed his habilitation. From 1981 to 2000 he was a professor at the University of Leipzig. In 2000 he was appointed visiting professor at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt , where he worked until 2015, where he helped to introduce the cultural studies course . In addition to the history of cultural perceptions and cultural studies, his research areas include the history of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, including in particular the social and cultural history of the Jews and Roma in Europe and the relations between Russia and Europe. He has also been involved at the adult education center in Leipzig since 1995 .

Wolfgang Geier was one of the founders of the Leipzig specialist journal Kultursoziologie and editor-in-chief until 2012.

He is a member of the Rosa Luxemburg Association and the Society for Cultural Sociology. In 2005 he co-founded the Wieser Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe (WEEO).
