Wolfgang Peter Meier

Wolfgang Peter Meier (* 1964 in Biberach ) is a German chemist ( macromolecular chemistry ).

Meier studied chemistry from 1984 at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with a diploma in 1989. He received his doctorate in Freiburg with a thesis on the self-organization of liquid-crystalline elastomers. In 1993 he went to the University of Basel, where he completed his habilitation in 1998. From 2001 he was Associate Professor at the International University of Bremen for two years. In 2003 he became professor for physical chemistry at the University of Basel .

He investigated the structure and network formation through self-organization in liquid crystals, investigated transport phenomena at interfaces and microemulsions of water in oil. He became known for the development of nano-structured synthetic macromolecules that form membranes as in biology and in which biological macromolecules can also be incorporated (biohybrids). They promise applications, for example, as drug carriers, nanoreactors and nanocapsules in therapy, in biosensors, in laboratories on the chip, in cosmetics and in novel biomimetic fuel cells.

In 2006 he received the Hermann Staudinger Prize .
