Wolfgang Statnick (born June 21, 1953 ) is a former German soccer player who was active in the second-rate GDR league for BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf in the 1970s and 1980s .

Athletic career

At the age of seven, Wolfgang Statnick began to play organized football in his hometown, the Brandenburg village of Makee, with the agricultural company sports association (BSG) "Tractor". Most recently he played there until 1973 with the men's team in the fifth class district class.

For the 1973/74 season Statnick joined the GDR league club Stahl Hennigsdorf. There he immediately belonged to the regular team, played all 22 league games and was BSG Stahl's second-best goalscorer with ten goals. In the following seasons Statnick was used as a midfielder, remained a regular player, but came only less often to goals. In November 1976 he did military service in the National People's Army for 18 monthsmoved in. At the beginning of the 1978/79 season he was available to Stahl Hennigsdorf again. After several attempts in all field positions, Statnick was regularly used in defense from the second half of the season. In this position he also played as a regular player until the end of his career in the GDR league. At the end of the 1983/84 season, Stahl Hennigsdorf had to be ninth among twelve teams, due to the reduction in the GDR league from five to two seasons.

During his ten GDR league seasons Statnick had played 174 league games and scored 16 goals. When BSG Stahl was promoted back to the GDR league after four years, Statnick was no longer part of the squad for the GDR league season 1988/89. He had previously had to end his career as a football player because of a complicated broken leg. As a trainer of the fourth-class district class team Stahl Hennigsdorf II, he remained connected to both football and BSG Stahl.
