Wombat Island is a small island off the coast of the East Antarctic Enderbyland . It lies in the Hannan Ice Shelf of Casey Bay , off the eastern end of McKinnon Island .
Aerial photos taken by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1956 were used to map them. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named them after the wombat , a family of marsupials native to Australia .
