Wong Kei Ying
Wong Kei-ying or Huang Qiying (* approx. 1815 in Xiqiao , Guangdong Province ; † 1886 in Guangzhou Canton ) was a Chinese martial artist and doctor who lived in the Qing Dynasty . He was one of the ten Tigers from Canton. His son, Wong Fei Hung , who learned and inherited martial arts and medical knowledge from him, is often portrayed as a folk hero in Chinese folk culture.
Life
Wong was born in Xiluzhou Village, Xiqiao Mountain Ridge, Nanhai Area, Guangzhou (Canton) Prefecture , Guangdong Province . This is now part of the Xiqiao district, in the Nanhai district of Foshan . He was born during the reign of Emperor Jiaqing . His exact date of birth is unknown. However, since his son Wong Fei Hung lived from 1847 to 1924, his year of birth is estimated to be between 1810 and 1820.
In his younger years, Wong made a living performing martial arts and acrobatics on the street. One day, he met Luk Ah Choi (陸 阿 采; Lu A'cai), a notable practitioner of the Hung Gar martial art . Luk Ah Choi was also a student of Chi Sim . Luk saw great potential in young Wong and took him on as an apprentice. According to another legend, Wong learned the martial art from his father Wong Tai (黃 泰; approx. 1782–1867), who in turn was taught by Luk Ah Choi.
Wong spent ten years training and refining skills including Single Hard Fist, Double Hard Fist, Taming the Tiger Fist, Mother and Son Butterfly Knives , Angry Tiger Fist, Fifth Brother Eight Trigram Pole, Flying Hook, and Black Tiger Fist. When his training was completed, he joined the Black Flag Army and became one of their martial arts instructors. However, because his pay was too low, he also opened a herbal medicine store to earn additional income for his family.
Wong Kei Ying was part of a group called the Ten Tigers of Canton. The Ten Tigers were martial artists who were reputed to be the best and most famous fighters in southern China. This included the ten most famous martial artists in Guangzhou (Canton) of the 19th century. His martial arts and medical knowledge were taken from his son Wong Fei Hung .
Culture
In the many films about Wong Fei Hung, especially in the series Once Upon a Time in China , Wong Kei Ying appears as a supporting role. However, in the 1993 film Iron Monkey , there is a fictional narrative of the relationship between Wong Kei Ying and his ten-year-old son, Wong Fei Hung. It shows how the younger Wong is shaped by the example of his father.
In the comic book series Atomic Robo he is a member of adventurers along with Nikola Tesla , Annie Oakley and Harry Houdini .
