WooCommerce is a free plug-in for WordPress that supplements the content management system with the functionality of an online shop . It has been downloaded more than 15 million times in total, making it one of the most popular WordPress plugins.
According to the statistics from BuiltWith, WooCommerce has a share of approx. 37% in e-commerce systems . In total, WooCommerce is used on approximately 1.05 million websites.
WooCommerce was originally created from a fork of the Jigoshop plugin. The plugin is characterized by the seamless embedding of the e-commerce functions in the WordPress framework. The custom post types and custom taxonomies provided by WordPress are used for all content types . The data is mostly stored using the meta-data that is deeply integrated in WordPress.
Extensions
One point of criticism is the lack of adaptation of WooCommerce to the German market. As a result, WooCommerce operators in Germany may receive warnings for failing to comply with German legal requirements. The free plug-in WooCommerce Germanized, licensed under GPLv3 , counteracts this .
There are also numerous free and paid extensions with additional features, design elements or payment methods (e.g. Bitcoin ).
