History and production

The company was founded in 1969 in Östersund in northern Sweden, 350 km south of the Arctic Circle, and is family-owned. Woolpower products are designed, produced and sold in Östersund. The company is owned by Gränsfors Bruks Moderbolag , a family-run group of companies that also includes the Gränsfors ax smithy. The engineers had already discovered the positive properties of particularly fine new wool in the 1970s. Initially, the company manufactured nylon tights and already had the technical know-how. The engineers were looking for a robust material that offers good protection against the cold, both during physical exertion and when at rest.

Initially, the products were sold under the name Ullfrotté . Since the name Ullfrotté is not protectable in Sweden, there were some Plagiarism of the company on the market. In 2006 the company management decided to sell their products under the name Woolpower and to convert their range to unisex sizes.

The production in Östersund is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 .

Ullfrotté original

In 1972 Woolpower developed its most famous material Ullfrotté Original in collaboration with the Swedish military. Ullfrotté consists of ⅔ fine Patagonian merino wool and ⅓ synthetic fibers (e.g. polyester or polyamide ). Due to the mixture, the material has a high insulating power, but remains breathable. Due to the synthetic content, the products are also mechanically resistant.

Workwear

Woolpower produces professional work clothing for various industries. Customers of their workwear and protective clothing include construction and forest workers, cleaning and disposal services, the police, fire departments, the German Armed Forces and the Swedish armed forces . In special Woolpower outerwear products, aramid fibers are added to the wool yarn in order to achieve higher heat and fire resistance. These garments have the addition FR (Flame Resistant) and the CE mark . All FR products from Woolpower meet the requirements of the EU standards for personal protective equipment in cold workplaces (EN 342 cold protection clothing (thermal lining)) as well as for protection against heat and flames (EN 531).
