from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WorldWideScience is a transnational science portal with the aim of making international scientific information centrally accessible via an Internet portal and thus promoting global scientific exchange. The portal is operated by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) of the US Department of Energy (DOE), and builds on the US science portal Science.gov (OSTI), the searchable databases of various state Authorities offers. 44 countries participate in the portal, including the USA with Science.gov, Great Britain with the British Library and Germany with vascoda . WorldWideScience enables a search in over 200 million documents.

The portal has been online since June 22, 2007. On January 21, 2007, United States Department of Energy representative Dr. Raymond L. Orbach and Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of the British Library, during the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information's winter meeting in London, an agreement to jointly develop the portal with the working title Science.world .

As early as 1999 and 2003, the DOE offered PubSCIENCE, a literature database that enabled free access to abstracts of scientific articles in the field of physical sciences and related disciplines via the World Wide Web with appropriate search functions. PubSCIENCE was stopped due to a lobbying campaign because companies objected that PubSCIENCE was competing with the offers of its members.
