History of the WRRC

In 1974 the European Rock'n'Roll Association (ERRA) was founded in four countries (Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland). Other countries such as Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden were quickly connected.

When Canada became a member a few years later, the ERRA was renamed and the WRRA (World Rock'n'Roll Association) was born. At the same time, there were other international rock 'n' roll groups, the FMDJ and the Fédération Mondial de Dance de Jazz.

In 1984, the two associations FMDJ and the WRRA merged to form today's World Rock'n'Roll Confederation or WRRC for short. At the same time the WRRA and FMDJ were dissolved. Since 1992 the distinction between amateurs and professionals ceased to exist.

In the spring of 1994, the WRRC was founded as an associate member of the International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF). As a result of the preliminary recognition of the IDSF in April 1995 by the Board of Directors of the Olympic Committee, recognition is also granted to the WRRC. Rock 'n' Roll has developed into a high-performance sport over the past 20 years. Today more than 31 nations belong to the WRRC.

The WRRC Presidium consists of five members. The current president is Miriam Kerpan Izak ( Ljubljana ), the vice-president is Daniel Bachmann ( Nürensdorf ).

Championships

Every year the association organizes international championships in Rock 'n' Roll , Boogie-Woogie , Lindy Hop and Bugg and regularly checks the judges' assessments.

The following championships are held every year

  • 6 World Masters tournaments for couples
  • European and world championships for couples, formations and juniors
  • World championships for juniors and boogie-woogie couples

Leaderboards

The international rankings contain over 200 pairs. Depending on the size of the national federations, including juniors and formations, between 20 and 2,000 pairs. In order to make the judges' evaluation and the competition system more transparent, the couples dance against each other in the most important rounds of the master’s competitions in a "knock-out system".

The public interest in the national events has increased significantly in recent years. Almost all major international championships have been televised since 1990. A number of sponsors are also associated with the WRRC and the sport of rock 'n' roll. Advertising and television regulations created in 1989 help the WRRC promote its events, primarily in the interests of dancing couples.
