Eponym | Vostok |
Vostok is an impact crater on Mars . It has a diameter of about 20 meters and is located on the Meridiani Planum plateau within the MC-19 Margaritifer Sinus Gradfeld . It is located about 1,200 m south of the Endeavor crater . The crater seems to be almost completely filled with drifting sand. But many rock outcrops are visible on the surface. The Mars rover Opportunity reached the crater on March 8, 2005 (sol 339). During his investigations, Opportunity explored the rock Gagarin , which is named after the cosmonaut Juri Gagarin , and reproduced the Laika soil sample . The rover left Vostok south and headed for the Erebus . The rover's mini-TES failed near the Vostok crater, but the malfunction soon disappeared.
