The Aboriginal Shire of Wujal Wujal is a local administrative area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 11.8 km² and has about 270 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the north of the state on the Cape York Peninsula at the foothills of the Bloomfield River in the middle of woodland about 125 km north of Cairns . The only settlement is Wujal Wujal, which is located directly on the river.
history
In 1886, the Lutheran Bloomfield River Mission for the indigenous people was established on the river. From 1979 the Aborigines returned from the Kuku Yalarni people to the area, they settled in the area of the former mission and named it Wujal Wujal after their name for the 40 meter high waterfalls of the Bloomfield River. The area was later placed under limited local Aboriginal self-government and received Aboriginal Shire status.

The Wujal Wujal Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
