The Wulai Taiche ( Chinese 烏 來 台 車 , Pinyin Wūlái Táichē ; English Wulai Trolley or Wulai Scenic Train ) is a narrow-gauge railway with the unusual track width of 545 mm in the Wulai district of New Taipei in Taiwan .
history
The originally hand-operated train was built under Japanese rule in 1928 to transport wood, lumberjack tools, tea and people. After the Highway was completed in 1951, most sections of the route were dismantled, with the exception of the 1.6 km long existing section. Since the woodworking industry subsided, the narrow-gauge railway was used for tourist transport.
The railway has been used for tourism since 1963. It was converted from a single-track to a double-track line in 1964. Since 1974, the vehicles are no longer driven manually, but motorized. Since 1987 the journey has ended 80 meters in front of the former waterfall station, as the Kehr tunnel is no longer used to turn vehicles.
In 2015, the railway was temporarily shut down due to severe damage from Typhoon Soudelor , in which a 120 m long section was completely destroyed. It was put back into operation on August 26, 2017 after almost two years of construction work. The Forest Department (林 務 局) allocated a budget of NT $ 55 million ( US $ 1.8 million ) for the restoration .

At the other end of the route, at Wūlái station, are the hot springs and the old tourist road.
