The Wyoming-class was a class battleship of the United States Navy , the two ships in both the First and Second World War were used.

The Wyoming class ships were considerably larger than their Florida class predecessors , the difference being about 20%. This enabled the installation of a sixth turret and improved armor. The Wyoming class thus had a total of 12 heavy artillery pieces, an impressive number for the time. The arrangement of the two central turrets turned out to be problematic, however, as these and their ammunition chambers were located near the boiler rooms, which led to significantly increased temperatures of the powder and a changed range. Attempts to artificially cool this area have had only moderate success.

USS Arkansas (BB-33)

The USS Arkansas on June 6, 1944 off the coast of Normandy

The USS Arkansas was laid down on January 25, 1910, and launched on January 14, 1911. Although it entered service off its sister ship on September 17, 1912, the class was named after the USS Wyoming . During the First World War , she was used together with the British deep sea fleet . At the end of the war, both ships of the class escorted the German deep-sea fleet to Scapa Flow , where it largely sank itself. However, there was no combat operation or a skirmish. The ship was modernized between the wars. During the Second World War , the USS Arkansas was used as a training ship, but in the summer of 1944, during Operation Overlord , it supported the landing of Allied troops in France by shelling land targets. A little later, she was used in the same role in Operation Dragoon on the southern French coast. She then supported in the Pacific War during the Battle of Iwojima and the Battle of Okinawa . The ship was sunk after the war in Bikini Atoll in the course of Operation Crossroads on July 25, 1946 during the Baker atomic bomb test .

USS Wyoming (BB-32)

The USS Wyoming was laid down on February 9, 1910, and launched on May 25, 1911, and was fully equipped on September 25, 1912. After the USA entered the war, it was used in World War I. At the end of the war, both ships were escorting the Wyoming class, the German High Seas Fleet to Scapa Flow , where these a few months later largely submerged itself . Like her sister ship, she was modernized, in 1931 her heavy artillery was expanded, which was exchanged for 5-inch cruiser armament. It served to train thousands of seafarers for the duration of the Second World War. In 1947 it was decommissioned and scrapped.
