Xóc Đĩa

Xóc Đĩa [ sɔk̚ diə̯ ] (also XocDia ), is a Vietnamese game of chance . The game is known and widespread in Vietnam under the name Xóc Đĩa , as evidenced by press reports about disputes about the game. The first clues can be found from around 1909. As with other criminal games such as the shell game , the exact age of the game can not be proven. The game is seen as a gang crime problem by the Vietnamese police .

Course of the game

It is played with four color-coded, coin-shaped game pieces . The player types in which color combination the thrown pieces come to lie. It is usually played for money. Depending on the combination, different odds are paid out for the stake. On the front side, all the game pieces are white or light gray. The backs of two pieces are black, the other two pieces are red. The four game pieces are shaken in a cup-like vessel (rice bowl) with a saucer, which is therefore not visible to the game participants. Then the bowl is removed and the game pieces lie in a color combination on the saucer. From a purely mathematical point of view, there are 16 ways in which the pieces can be placed. Due to the two red and two black sides, however, some patterns overlap, so that there are only 9 different possibilities with different probabilities :

Odds
combination probability
black black red red 1/16
black black gray gray 1/16
red red gray gray 1/16
gray gray gray gray 1/16
black black red gray 2/16
