Lists on the subject

The M26 MASS ( M odular A ccessory S hotgun S ystem) is an underflow shotgun which, like the M203 grenade launcher under the hand guard of an M16 - or M4 assault rifle can be mounted.

history

The US Army's Soldier Battle Lab had the idea in the late 1990s of developing a shotgun that could be mounted under the barrel of an assault rifle in order to have a weapon with high firepower in house-to-house combat . This approach was not new, the Knight's Armament Company had already developed the Masterkey system, which is suitable for the M16 and M4 assault rifles.

technology

The weapon represents a great improvement of the master key system. In contrast to this, it no longer has a permanently installed tube magazine , but an exchangeable box magazine , which speeds up the reloading process considerably. Furthermore, the weapon was equipped with a cylinder bolt lock (instead of a pump action bolt lock ). The MASS can also be used as a single weapon, for this purpose it is provided with a pistol grip and a shoulder rest.
