The XOX-Theater is a free theater in the former factory building of the XOX-Biskuit-Fabrik in Kleve-Kellen . The building is a historical monument. After the biscuit factory closed in 1977, parts of the building were used as storage or retail space. In 1997, eleven Klever theater friends founded the 600 m² theater with around 100 seats and a foyer. The XOX-Theater is the only theater in the region with its own ensemble.

In addition to in-house productions, guest performances, readings, workshops and concerts are carried out in the XOX Theater. The theater work is financially and organizationally supported by a non-profit association.

The theater is the creator and organizer of the annual festival "Klever XOX-Sommertheater", which has been taking place since 2002 in urban locations such as the inner courtyard of the Schwanenburg , the forecourt of the Lower City Church or the Klever fish market. Prominent theater professionals from outside are also invited. The event is funded by the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR).

In 2003 the XOX-Theater received the Johann Moritz Culture Prize from the city of Kleve for its contribution to the cultural life of the region.

From November 2013 to September 2014 the theater was closed by the city administration of Kleve due to the building permit, which was no longer valid after a renovation, and due to the need for fire protection retrofitting.

reception

In 2008 the Theater Bash brought plays from the last few days by the American author Neil LaBute to the stage, which the Rheinische Post praised for its “great monologues that get under your skin”. The web portal DerWesten 2008, jointly operated by the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and WDR, dedicated a report entitled The small basics of great art to a pantomime workshop by the Berlin duo Mimusen .
