XPaint (alternatively also spelled Xpaint ) is a free image processing program for X window systems on Unix-like operating systems . The software focuses on the reduction to the essentials and easy accessibility.
features
XPaint has a very low memory footprint and can be compiled for most Unix-like systems.
It offers all essential drawing and painting tools as well as a text editor. Xpaint supports most of the common raster graphics formats, and some vector graphics and other file formats can also be edited, such as. B. TeX , LaTeX and PDF .
XPaint has a multi-document surface with several windows to group functions thematically.
In addition to basic operations (such as cropping and rotating ), the newer versions also offer support for more advanced image manipulations, such as size conversions, filters, geometric distortion, color corrections, scripting, setting levels and alpha channel transparency, among others.
The scripting function of XPaint also enables z. B. an automated batch processing, the creation of images and programmable filters. A command cancellation function (English " undo ") allows the cancellation of the last 20 commands.
The software is distributed as free software also in source code according to the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL, Version 3).
technology
The file format support depends on separate (sometimes optional) libraries. The software is written in C and the user interface is based on widget toolkits from the Xaw toolkit family. The scripting works through the compilation of C scripts, which must be adapted to the internal programming interface .
history
XPaint was originally written by David Koblas around 1993 and later expanded from 1996 to 1999 (Versions 2.2.x to 2.5.7) by Torsten Martinsen based on David's last version 2.1.1. It has been maintained and developed by Jean-Pierre Demailly since around 2000.
