Charnego

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charnego or Xarnego is a Catalan term that means something like foreigner. It can be compared to the ancient Greek "Barbaros".

Emergence

In the course of the 20th century, Charnego referred to Spaniards who immigrated from a non- Catalan-speaking region or their descendants in Catalonia , mostly from Castile , Extremadura or Andalusia . The term, originally intended as a foreign term pejorative , became a Geusen word , i. H. the originally pejorative external name is now used with pride as a self-name.

etymology

According to the Diccionario de la Lengua Española , the term charnego can be traced back to the Catalan xarnego , which in turn comes from the Castilian lucharniego . The perro lucharniego is the dog that is trained to hunt at night. This is etymologically obscured by the fact that it is not easy to see that lucharniego actually comes from nocharniego (meaning "on the move at night").
