Xestes

Xestes (Gr. Ξέστης) is an ancient measure of capacity for wine = 12 kyathoi = 1/96 medimnos of about 54 l on the one hand, also equated to the dry measure sextarius of 0.544 l = 1/16 modius of about 8.7 l or a weighted one Volume of 2 Librae oil, the equivalent of just under 1 liter. The standard of measure obtained according to Ephiphanius von Salamis by weighing oil is passed down in various other sources, for example in the medicine of Dioscorides and also through standard vessels.
