Xiangdong Ji

Xiangdong Ji (* 1962 ) is a Chinese theoretical nuclear and elementary particle physicist.

Xiangdong Ji graduated from Tongji University with a bachelor's degree in 1982 and received his PhD from Drexel University in 1987 . As a post-doctoral student , he was at Caltech and MIT. In 1991 he became an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and in 1996 Professor at the University of Maryland , where he was Director of the Maryland Center for Fundamental Physics from 2007 to 2009. He is also Professor and Director of the Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Since 2005 he has also been visiting professor at Beijing University.

In 2014 he received the Humboldt Research Award and in 2015 the Outstanding Nuclear Physicists Award from Jefferson Sciences Associates. In 2000 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2003 he received the Oversea Outstanding Chinese Scientist Award.

In 2016 he received the Herman Feshbach Prize in Theoretical Nuclear Physics for pioneering the development of tools to characterize the structure of nucleons within the QCD and how its properties can be explored in experiments .

In addition to his focus on theoretical nuclear physics, he deals with the search for dark matter with detectors with liquid xenon (with sterile neutrinos as candidates for dark matter), leptogenesis , neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations in GUT models ( see SO (10)).
