XnView is an image management software and image viewer with which simple image processing is also possible and images can be converted into other file formats . The program is considered mature; in spring 1998 the first version 1.05 appeared.
Technical details
XnView offers a scripting language with which e.g. B. Images can be converted and renamed at the same time. Further features are resizing, color space manipulation, various filters and a slide show.
JPEG files can be changed without loss - XnView can rotate JPGs (also according to Exif orientation), mirror and crop ( cropping ) without having to re-encode the image.
The program is free for private use, easy to use, and requires little system resources. It can read more than 500 graphic formats and write over 70.
The original program is only available for Windows . The successor called XnViewMP (multi-platform) is also available for macOS and Linux and, in addition to a uniform user interface based on Qt , also has support for Unicode . XnViewMP has improved performance because it now uses multiple processor cores and is also available as a 64-bit version.
Although the program is considered an image viewer, it can also read, process and convert RAW files.
The program has been awarded five out of five stars several times by various websites that offer free software for download.
XnView 2.13 in December 2013 was the last version for Windows older than Windows XP. From version 2.45 an error message appears when starting XP, which can be clicked away.
