Yōichi Takahashi ( Japanese 高橋 陽 一 , Takahashi Yōichi ; born July 28, 1960 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese manga artist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Takahashi worked as an assistant for manga artists Shinji Hiramatsu and Takeshi Miya . Takahashi published his first work as a professional draftsman in 1980 with the short story Captain Tsubasa in Shōnen Jump , the best-selling manga magazine . The short soccer manga was so well received that it was expanded into a series in 1981. Until 1988, Captain Tsubasa appeared in Shōnen Jump . The over 6500 page manga was a great commercial success, was implemented as a 128-part anime television series and exported to several countries.

It was followed by some other mangas for Shōnen Jump , but they could not come close to the success of Captain Tsubasa by far ; These mangas include the baseball manga Ace! (1990-1991) and the boxing manga Chibi (1992-1993).

Since 1994 Takahashi draws on sequels of Captain Tsubasa , until 1997 for Shōnen Jump , then for Young Jump . Young Jump is aimed at an older target group than Shōnen Jump , which is designed for elementary and middle school students, and is aimed at young men. This is reflected in the content of the Captain Tsubasa sequels, in which the main character has now grown up and enjoys success at professional football clubs around the world. The book publications for Captain Tsubasa and its sequels, for which there are also several anime adaptations, sold over 70 million copies in Japan.

From 2002 to 2004 the author created another soccer manga with Hungry Heart: Wild Striker . This appeared, for the first time in Takahashi's career, not in Shōnen Jump or in one of its sister magazines (with Shūeisha ), but in Shōnen Champion magazine (with Akita Shoten ). Hungry Heart: Wild Striker was filmed as an anime.
