The Ya-Po-Ah Terrace (often referred to as The High Place ) is a building in Downtown Eugene and the tallest building in the city. In the past, the construction was often controversial after it was built as a retirement home at the bottom of a hill in 1968.

history

The name “Ya Po Ah” is derived from the language of the Kalapuya Indians , an Indian tribe from the Willamette Valley region , and literally means “ Very High Place” (German: “very high place”). The name is based on the name of the Skinner Butte , a hill in Eugene, which was named after the city founder Eugenes, Eugene Franklin Skinner.

The apartment building has 222 rooms spread over 18 floors. It also houses a concert hall as well as a library and various shops. Shortly after the building was completed in 1968, there were public complaints about the size and height of the building, which led to the passing of several laws shortly thereafter that would limit the maximum height and number of floors for future construction projects. This was primarily intended to ensure a clear view of the neighboring mountains. However, until the late 1990s, the passing of the law prevented the city from expanding upwards in the city center, which meant that the suburban regions had to expand in the course of the population growth. It was only in the last decade that the restrictions began to be gradually removed in order to force the development of Downton Eugene.
