Yamada Isuzu
Yamada Isuzu ( Japanese 山田 五十鈴 ; born February 5, 1917 in Osaka as Yamada Mitsu 山田 美 津 ; † July 9, 2012 ) was a Japanese actress .
Life
Yamada, the daughter of actor Yamada Kazuo, made her first film Adauchi Senshu at the age of only 13 and subsequently became best known for her collaboration with director Kenji Mizoguchi , who starred in landmark films such as Osaka Elegy and The Sisters of Gion gave. The latter was her final breakthrough, the role of the young geisha Omocha, who rebelled against tradition, made her a star in Japan. During the Second World War she was one of the most popular actresses and made 20 films between 1939 and 1945 alone, including Shōri no Hi made and Shanhai no Tsuki with director Mikio Naruse . Her private life was just as lively as her film career: after three divorces, she married for the fourth time in 1956, a monstrous process for Japan, which was still very traditional at the time.
In 1957 the second spring of her career began, so to speak, which was characterized by the collaboration with Akira Kurosawa in films such as Das Schloss im Spinnwebwald and Nachtasyl , through which she also became known in the West. In Kurosawa's great success Yojimbo - The Bodyguard , she played her last major role as a sneaky brothel boss in 1961. Afterwards, her career as a film actress, in which she had made 90 films, slowly came to an end and she concentrated on working in the theater. From 1951 to 1952 she joined the Gekidan Mingei (劇 団 民 藝), in 1954 she founded her own stage company Gendai Haiyū Kyōkai (現代 俳 優 協会). Her biggest stage success was Tanuki .
In 1993 Yamada was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2000 she was awarded the Order of Culture .
