Nachtasyl ( Japanese ど ん 底 , Donzoko , dt. About: "at the bottom") is a drama from 1957 by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa based on the play of the same name by Maxim Gorki from 1902. The film was produced by the studio Tōhō Company produced.
action
The location of the film is a night asylum, in which several failed existences (a whore, a criminal scholar, a decrepit samurai, an alcoholic actor, a thief and a craftsman with his terminally ill wife) find shelter. It is the story of penniless, exploited and humiliated people who all long for a better life, but who cannot find the strength in themselves to change their lives.
The focus of the plot is a friendly Buddhist priest, who also finds shelter in the night asylum. He tries to help the characters in their self-discovery and thus lead them to a better life. But since he fails to recognize their physical and psychological dependencies, he fails and only causes greater harm.
Reviews
“A faithful adaptation of Gorky's play in which even the priest finds his counterpart in the pilgrim Luka. By using several cameras at the same time, Kurosawa succeeds in a virtuoso resolution of the drama in a visually and mentally impressive film, despite the spatial restrictions. "
