Judo Saga - The Legend of the Great Judo ( Japanese 姿 三四郎 Sugata Sanshirō ) is a Japanese feature film from 1943 based on a novel by Tsuneo Tomita . Directed by Akira Kurosawa , who also wrote the script. The main role played Denjirō Ōkōchi . The film was produced by Toho .

The film tells of Sugata Sanshirō in Japan in 1882 and deals with the founding of judo and its conflicts with Jiu Jitsu .

action

The film describes the life of the young Sugata Sanshirō. He moves into the city from the country to learn Japanese martial arts, especially Jiu Jitsu. There he meets a group of Jiu-Jitsu students who are planning an attack on the teacher Yano, who has just developed judo as a new form of self-defense. This attack fails, however, the youths are defeated by Yano, although he only uses one hand in the fight. Sugata then joins Yano to learn judo with him.

The film, which was shot in Kyoto , came to Japanese theaters on March 23, 1943 and was re-released after World War II , but the re-edition was 17 minutes short of the original. The lost material has not yet been found.

In 1945 a sequel to the film was released under the title Sugata Sanshiro Continuation or Zoku Sugata Sanshirō in the original and with the same staff.

Remakes

The film experienced several remakes, the first in 1955 by Shigeo Tanaka .

The best known is probably Seiichuro Uchikawa's version from 1965, borne by the introduction of the sport of judo (men) at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo .

Kunio Watanabe filmed the story in 1970 and Kihachi Okamoto in 1977 based on their own script .
