Balance of a life ( Japanese 生 き も の の 記録 , Ikimono no Kiroku , alternative title: A life in fear ) is a black and white film drama produced by Tōhō in Japan in 1955 by the director Akira Kurosawa .

The film was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1956 .

action

Kiichi Nakajima, the owner of a foundry, believes Japan will be destroyed by an imminent nuclear catastrophe. In his fear, he decides to give up the foundry and move himself and his family to Brazil, to a farm near São Paulo . He believes that South America will be the only safe place to protect against a nuclear threat. His family does not share his fears and is seeking a court hearing aimed at ruling him out. You want to sell the foundry so that you can use the money for yourself. As the trial progresses, the judicial advisory board in particular, Dr. Put Harada in the shoes of Kiichi Nakajima and is undecided about the court's decision. Meanwhile, Kiichi Nakajima's delusions continue to grow. He sees the foundry as a barrier between his plan and his family's decision to accompany him, and burns it down. Shortly afterwards, he is in a state of catharsis and admitted to a mental hospital.

backgrounds

This was the last film that Kurosawa collaborated with composer Fumio Hayasaka . Hayasaka died of tuberculosis in 1955 . Both were close friends since 1948 and worked on several films together.

For Toshirō Mifune this film was the eighth collaboration with Kurosawa. Overall, he played a leading role in 16 Kurosawa's films from 1948 to 1965.

For the role of the head of the family Kiichi Nakajima, the then 35-year-old Toshirō Mifune was made up to the age of 60.
