action
The film is set during a hot and humid summer in Tokyo in 1949. The young police officer Murakami is stolen his Colt pistol loaded with seven cartridges in a crowded bus . Murakami is beside himself. He fears the worst consequences for his young career. Together with his older colleague Sato from the theft department, Murakami goes on the trail of the thief. On this occasion, the two police officers track down the gun stealer Hondo, whom they can arrest in the baseball stadium. But there is still no trace of Murakami's pistol. But when a robbery was carried out with this weapon, they track down the gangster Yusa. Murakami makes it hard for his inattention to injure people. Another robbery occurs in which a woman is killed. The two policemen come under increasing time pressure. Yusa has five cartridges left. Murakami and Sato visit Yusa's friend Harumi Namaki, who works as a revue dancer . At first the girl doesn't want anything to do with the police, but her mother reveals that Yusa was in the house recently. While Murakami stays with the girl, Sato sets out to chase Yusa alone. Finally he finds him in a hotel. When Sato tries to call for reinforcements, Yusa notices. He shoots Sato and escapes.
Sato is now seriously injured in hospital and Murakami blames himself for his colleague's injury. Murakami is now alone in pursuit. Harumi tells him that she wanted to meet Yusa at the train station. Murakami goes to the train station but has only a vague idea of what Yusa looks like. Only because of the dirty clothes he can finally recognize him. When Yusa realizes that he has been recognized, he flees again. Murakami can finally put him in a forest. Yusa shoots him, but shoots all cartridges. Murakami finally arrests him.
Reviews
“Exquisitely staged and played existentialist crime film with an abundance of realistic observations of city life; at the same time a precise psychological study of the ambiguity of human action and the ambivalence of identities. "
