In 1996, Yamaha launched a portable synthesizer, the CS1X . The blue CS1X was built especially for the techno and groove music market. The synthesizer has the following features:

- 4.5 MB sample ROM
- 32 voice polyphony
- 30 types of arpeggiator
- 11 chorus and reverb algorithms
- 43 Variation Effect Algorithms
- Real-time control function (6 knobs, pitch and modulation wheel)
128 Preset Performances and 128 User Performances are available to the user. The synthesizer was used by many bands and musicians such as Underworld , Jamiroquai and David Bowie . The models CS 2 X and CS 6 X followed in 1999.
