Yamazaki ( Japanese 山崎 蒸 溜 所 , Yamazaki Jōryūsho ) is a whiskey distillery owned by Suntory in Shimamoto , Osaka Prefecture . The single malt whiskey of the same name Yamazaki whiskey is produced there. The main reason for the choice of the company headquarters was the excellent water quality of the area called Minaseno . Furthermore, the location at the foot of Mount Tennozan and close to the confluence of the three rivers Katsura , Kizu and Uji creates a special climate, which is mainly characterized by very high humidity.

history

The Yamazaki distillery was opened in 1923 by Torii Shinjirō ( 鳥 井 信 治郎 ) as the first malt whiskey distillery in Japan. The founder and chairman of Kotobukiya (the predecessor of Suntory ) wanted to produce a serious whiskey and therefore hired Taketsuru Masataka ( 竹 鶴 政 孝 ), whom he appointed factory director of the Yamazaki distillery in 1924. This descendant of a 17th century sake brewing family traveled to Scotland in 1918 to study at the University of Glasgow and learn how to make Scotch whiskey on site. He married Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan († 1961) from Scotland, who went to Japan with him in 1920. Under Taketsuru (* 1894), the production of the first whiskey was completed in 1929, which was sold as shirofuda ( 白 札 , English white label ). Due to differences with Torii, Taketsuru left the company in 1934 and founded the company Daju-Nippon Kaju KK , later called Nikka (whiskey) , on Hokkaidō in the same year .
