The Yangykala Gorge is a canyon in Turkmenistan .

location

The gorge is about 160 kilometers north of Balkanabat and 160 km east of the city of Turkmenbashi , which is located on the Caspian Sea . The region is shaped by the Karakum desert and has a very arid climate . In the vicinity of the Yangykala Gorge there are other, less well-known gorges, such as the Yangisuw Gorge . With the Gözli Ata mausoleum , one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Turkmenistan is located in the southwest of the gorge.

5.5 million years ago the limestone was carved out by the Amu Darya River , creating a deep gorge, the Yangykala Gorge. The water left bizarre rock formations. The colorful limestone deposits in the canyon have given the canyon the nickname Grand Canyon Asia , based on the Grand Canyon in the USA.

tourism

The gorge is considered one of the most impressive attractions in Turkmenistan. Due to the difficult accessibility, there have been no major tourist flows so far. To visit the Yangykala Gorge, a four-hour drive from Balkanabat is necessary.
