Yasufumi Tanahashi ( Japanese 棚 橋 泰 文 , Tanahashi Yasufumi ; born February 11, 1963 in Gifu Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), member of the Shūgiin , the lower house, and former minister. In the LDP he belongs to the Tsushima faction .

Life

After studying law at the University of Tokyo , Tanahashi became a civil servant at MITI in 1987 . In 1993 he left the ministry and started working as a lawyer in Ōgaki . In the 1996 Shūgiin election , he was elected to parliament for the LDP for the first time in the 2nd constituency of Gifu and has been confirmed there three times since then.

In 2004, Prime Minister Jun'ichirō Koizumi Tanahashi appointed Minister of State for Science and Technology, Food Safety and Information Technology to his third cabinet . After a year he was replaced by Iwao Matsuda .

At Shūgiin, Tanahashi is a member of the Japan-Korean Parliamentary Group and has headed the Special Committee on Political Ethics and Elections since 2005.

In the 2007 LDP election, Tanahashi led a group of MPs who tried to convince Koizumi to run again. He refused to return as party leader and prime minister. In the 2008 election, Tanahashi himself considered running, but did not find the necessary support from 20 MPs.
