Yechiel Leo Brukner (born 1957 in Zurich ) is an Israeli-Swiss rabbi and has been the community rabbi of the Cologne synagogue community since 2018 .

parents

His father Berek Brukner (* 1922 in Wolbrom ; † 1980 in Zurich) was deported with his family after German troops marched into Poland as part of the persecution of the Jews. While all of his relatives were murdered, Brukner was liberated on April 11, 1945 by American soldiers from the Buchenwald concentration camp , where he was last imprisoned. He came to Switzerland in June 1945 through a program in Switzerland, which took in 377 young Holocaust survivors for some time “for recreation”. In addition, however, he disguised his true date of birth in order to be able to be there. In 1951 he married Bayla Berta Bessermann (* August 1933) from Switzerland and was able to stay in the Alpine country. In 1957 his son Yechiel was born.

Life

Yechiel Brukner grew up in Zurich and attended the teachers' seminar of the Yeshiva Ez Chajim in Montreux and graduated with the recognition of the Israeli Ministry of Education. From 1986 he attended the Jerusalem Temple Institute and was ordained a rabbi by the Israeli chief rabbinate. He taught Jewish subjects at a yeshiva grammar school and founded a Jewish settlement. After 22 years in Israel, he and his wife Sarah moved to Munich, where he led a yeshiva from 2008 to 2013 as part of the activities of the “Tora Mitzion Learning Center” in the synagogue (of the Chabad dynasty ) on Possartstrasse . Brukner still works at the Munich learning center, which necessitates a lot of trips between Cologne and the Bavarian capital.

Rabbi in Cologne

After Jaron Engelmayer resigned as rabbi in January 2015, the Cologne synagogue community remained without a spiritual leader for three years. His compatriot Brukner already knew the Cologne community through previous invitations from Engelmayer. Since January 2018 he has been helping out there occasionally and in March 2018 he was fully won over to the office of community rabbi, which he has held since September 1, 2018.

Rabbi Brukner and his wife Sarah have six children and 16 grandchildren. He is a member of the Orthodox Rabbinical Conference .
