Yessongs is the first live album and the sixth work by the progressive rock band Yes . It was released in 1973 and is considered by fan and critic circles to be one of the best live albums of the 1970s. Due to the change of drummer, Bill Bruford leaves and Alan White comes, there are songs with two different drummers on this album.

Content & Cover

The first editions of the album are provided with ample additions. The sleeves of the three LPs are printed in pure white with a YES logo. The cover has four slots for the three records and one for a twelve-page booklet with live photos of Martin Dean , Roger Dean's brother . There is a double page for the five band members, a page for a group picture and a page for portraits of the crew. Texts are only available for special pressings.

Although they are all different, they tell a common story. On the last page we find parts of the planet that disintegrated at Fragile , floating freely in space, accompanied by a space sailing ship. This picture is tellingly titled escape .

On the first of three inside pages we find the picture arrival which shows the landing of the parts on a planet populated by fish. Mind you, it's a soft landing and not an impact. This picture, like the booklet, will later be sacrificed to save money. When it was released on the CD, it was included in the booklet. The picture awakening on the second inside already shows deer-like creatures and pathways , the one on the third shows a humanoid and the space sailing ship is there again. This last image can also be found on the first page of the cover, without the living being and the ship. The first page is also adorned with a graphic and Yessongs is written in the well-known curved letters above the image and graphic ; the Yes lettering has been used since Close to the Edge .

The triple album was initially celebrated by many music fans as the best live LP of its time and sold extremely well. It begins with excerpts from The Firebird by Igor Fjodorowitsch Stravinsky , also later often used Yes intro for her live performances. Excerpts from Rick Wakeman's The Six Wives of Henry VIII are also included . Some pieces are even rated better musically than the studio versions , especially Siberian Kathru is played more brilliantly and is superior to the original version of Close to the Edge .

However, this quickly led to criticism of the method of creating the album, because with the exception of the drums and the vocal parts, almost all the live recorded parts of bass, guitar and keyboards were subsequently recorded again in the studio and ultimately replaced the original recordings (which were technically poorer in sound) of the respective live recordings. This becomes particularly clear with the title Yours Is No Disgrace , the opening part of which is original, is then transferred to the recording made in the studio, the middle part again contains the original recording to reproduce the subsequent studio recording again until almost the final applause. The reason for this was that Steve Howe had offered his colleagues at short notice to incorporate a longer guitar improvisation into the song as a solo part, which made the song almost twice as long as its counterpart from The Yes album . Also the pieces The Fish ; Perpetual Change and Starship Trooper differ significantly from the versions of the studio albums. But there was also approval of the recording procedure, because on Perpetual Change, for example, Bill Bruford is on drums and this version with him is unique in the form contained on the album.

Later on in the album, Jon Anderson intones a passage from Stravinsky's ballet Le sacre du printemps (The Sacrifice of Spring). One thing was shown for the first time on the album Yessongs , namely that the Yes songs tend to live up to ten-minute long epics. With the exception of Close to the Edge , each LP side has practically only two songs.
