Ylem -

Ylem is the sixth album by the German black metal band Dark Fortress . It was released in Europe in January 2010 and in the United States in February . With the title, the band refers to the term Ylem for the original state of matter or an original substance.

Emergence

The album was recorded in the Woodshed Studios of Dark Fortress guitarist V. Santura.

Style and content

In contrast to the previous album Eidolon , Ylem is not a concept album, although the songs all take up the same topic, namely death . As the World Keels Over is inspired by a ritual by Aleister Crowley . The bonus track Sycamore Trees is a cover version of the theme song of the crime series Twin Peaks , which was written by Angelo Badalamenti .

reception

The reviews for the album were very mixed.

Robert Müller from Metal Hammer magazine gave the album four out of seven points. In the magazine's “Soundcheck”, however, it reached eighth place. The rock-hard magazine awarded eight out of ten points and described Ylem as "first class". In Legacy magazine, the album achieved the highest number of points and second soundcheck place. Jonathan Barkan praised the good production of the album, even if he thinks the bass is hard to hear. Dave Schalk, on the other hand, describes the production as "crystal clear" and the songwriting as "varied". He hears "progressive moments" on the album. Erik Thomas sees the album simply as a copy of existing material from other bands. He finds the album too inconsistent overall.
