Yoav Shoham

Yoav Shoham (born January 22, 1956 in Israel ) is an Israeli computer scientist who deals with artificial intelligence (AI), game theory and especially multi-agent systems .

Shoham received his PhD in computer science from Drew McDermott at Yale University in 1987 (Reasoning about Change: Time and Causation from the Standpoint of Artificial Intelligence). He is a professor at Stanford University .

He dealt with various areas of AI, such as temporal logic, non-monotonic logics, theory of Common Sense and later with multi-agent systems (of which he is a popular textbook written with his student Leyton-Brown), the interaction of computer science and game theory and Electronic Commerce .

Shoham founded Trading Dynamics in Mountain View in 1998 (e-commerce software, including auctions), which was sold to Ariba in 1999 . In 2011 he was one of the founders of Katango, which was sold to Google in 2013 . After selling an app and the associated company to Google in 2015 (Timeful, for appointment calendar planning), he became Principal Scientist at Google in 2016.

In 2012 he received the ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award with Moshe Tennenholtz for fundamental contributions to the interface between computer science, game theory and economics, especially multi-agent systems and social coordination . The laudatory speech also highlighted his pioneering work in agent-oriented programming , which provided a method for specifying distributed multi- agent systems, and (combinatorial) auctions. for 2019 Shoham was awarded the IJCAI Award for Research Excellence . He is a fellow of the AAAI , a founding member of the Game Theory Society and received the ACM SIGART Autonomous Agents Research Award.

In 2008 he donated the Kalai Prize for work at the interface between computer science and game theory.
