Yoshii Junji

Yoshii Junji ( Japanese 吉 井 淳 二 ; born March 6, 1904 in Sueyoshi , Kagoshima Prefecture ; died November 23, 2004 ) was a Japanese painter in the western, Yōga style of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Yoshii graduated from the Kagoshima Prefecture Shibushi Middle School (today: Shibushi High School) in 1923 . He then went to Tokyo and attended the local art college ( Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō , forerunner of the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku ), from which he graduated in 1928.

In 1940 he became a full member of the artist group Nika-kai, and in 1961 he was elected to the board of directors. In 1965 he received the Prize of the Japanese Academy of Arts ( 日本 芸 術 院 賞 ), in 1977 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun , third class. In 1979 he became president of Nika-kai.

In 1985 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits , and in 1989 he received the Order of Culture . Other honors include honorary membership in the Société du Salon d'Automne and consultancy for the "Art Exhibition South Japan" ( 南 日本 美術展 , Minami-Nihon bijutsu-ten ).

  • "Women on the Beach" ( 浜 の 女 た ち , Hama no onnatachi ; 1963),
  • "Get water" ( 水 汲 , Mizukumi ; 1964),
  • "On the market" ( 市場 に て , Ichiba nite ; 1977),
  • “Failla” ( フ ェ イ ラ , Feira ; 1983) and
  • “Resting in the village” ( 村 の 休憩 所 , Mura no kyūkeijo ; 1985).

Yoshii's late work shows a tendency towards photographic realism.
