Banana Yoshimoto
Banana Yoshimoto ( Japanese よ し も と ば な な Yoshimoto Banana , born July 24, 1964 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese writer . Her real name is Mahoko Yoshimoto ( 吉 本 真 秀 子 Yoshimoto Mahoko ).
Live and act
She is the daughter of Takaaki Yoshimoto (also known as Ryūmei ), an influential Japanese New Left thinker , poet, and literary critic, and Kazuko Yoshimoto, a haiku poet. Inspired by her older sister, Haruno Yoiko, a successful mangaka , Yoshimoto was looking for something she enjoyed herself and started writing when she was around five. She moved in with her boyfriend while attending high school and eventually studied Japanese literature at Nihon Daigaku . When asked about her training time, she replied in an interview: “I didn't do much sports, just stayed up until late, writing novels. As a result I was dozing in class every day. In addition to that, booze came into my life at university. It's almost like I went to university to learn how to drink. Still I have no regrets about those days (...) though I wish I had studied a bit harder then “.
For her thesis, the story Moonlight Shadow , she received the University's Dean's Prize in 1986 ( 学 部長 賞 ). After completing her studies, she first worked as a waitress in the restaurant of a golf club in Tokyo, where she wrote the story Kitchen during her breaks from work . For her first work Kitchen she received the 6th Kaien Literature Prize for Debutants ( 海燕 新人 文学 賞 , Kaien Shinjin Bungakushō ) in 1987 and a year later the 16th Izumi-Kyōka Literature Prize of the city of Kanazawa . For Utagata and Sanctuary , she was awarded the Minister of Education's 89th Artist Prize for Debutants in 1988. With Tsugumi she won the 2nd Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize ( 山 本 周五郎 賞 ) in 1989 , with Amrita the 5th Murasaki Shikibu Literature Prize . Furin to nanbei received the 10th Bunkamura Prix des Deux Magots in October 2000 .
In 2000, she married Tahada Hiroyoshi, a general practitioner , with whom she has a son. Yoshimoto comments on the wedding in three short sentences on her homepage: “We were married in August 2000. We only had the wedding ceremony. I married him because I thought that I could get on well with him (...). "
Banana is Yoshimoto's stage name. Much has been speculated about the reasons for choosing this extravagant name. Some critics want to see Yoshimoto's demarcation from the important role of her father. Yoshimoto herself has always denied such speculations and claims that she chose her stage name because of the beauty of the red flowers of the Bijinsho ( Red Banana Flower ).
Features and recurring motifs in Banana's works are:
- Death (especially the loss of people close to the narrator)
- Japanese first- person narration ( Shishōsetsu私 小説 )
- An open display of unconventional sexuality
- Supernatural phenomena (e.g. two people experiencing the same dream)
- Proximity to the genre of Shōjo Manga
