The Nihon University ( Japanese 日本大学 , Nihon daigaku , short Nichidai ( Japanese 日大 ) or NU ) is a private Japanese university (私立大学, Shiritsu daigaku) and one of the largest in the country. Its headquarters are in Kudanminami, Chiyoda-ku , Tokyo .

Today the university has 14 faculties (students: approx. 68,000) and 20 graduate schools (students: approx. 3,600).

history

The university was founded in October 1889 by the Japanese Minister of Justice Yamada Akiyoshi ( 山田 顕 義 , 1844-1892) as a Nihon School of Law ( 日本 法律 学校 , Nihon hōritsu gakkō ). She was an evening school at the Kōten Kōkyūjo ( 皇 典 講究 所 , Research Institute for the Japanese Classics , today: Kokugakuin ). In 1895 she put the new school building in what is now the Misakichō campus. In December 1898 it became an independent school and in August 1903 it was renamed Nihon Daigaku (Eng. "Nihon University"). In April 1920 she achieved university status.

Faculties

  • Faculty of Law (on Misakichō Campus / Ōmiya Campus)
    Founded in 1889; the oldest faculty in the university. The main campus is Misakichō Campus; the Ōmiya campus is for the newbies.
  • Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences
    Founded in 1901 as the Middle School Teacher Training Department ( 高等 師 範科 ) of Nihon Law School. In 1924 the university founded the Department of Humanities. In 1949 the department developed into the Faculty of Humanities. In 1958 she set up natural science courses and renamed herself the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences.
  • Faculty of Economics (on Misakichō Campus)
    Founded in 1904 as the Commercial Science Department of Nihon Law School. In 1920 it developed into the Faculty of Commerce Science at Nihon University. In 1934 it was renamed the Faculty of Economics. In 1957 it was divided into two faculties: Economics and Business Studies.
  • Faculty of Business Studies (on Kinuta Campus)
    Founded in 1904 as the Commercial Science Department of Nihon Law School.
  • Faculty of Arts (on Ekoda Campus / Tokorozawa Campus)
    Founded in 1921 as the Department of Aesthetics at Nihon University. In 1939 the department moved to what is now the Ekoda campus. In 1949 it developed into the Faculty of Arts.
  • Faculty of Intercultural Studies (founded in 1978, on the Mishima campus)
  • Faculty of Science and Engineering (on Surugadai Campus / Funabashi Campus)
    Founded in 1920 as the Nihon University Foundation High Technical School ( 日本 大学 高等 工 ). In 1928 the university established the Faculty of Engineering. In 1958 she took courses in physics and renamed herself the Faculty of Natural and Engineering Sciences.
  • Faculty of Industrial Engineering ( 生産 工 学部 , on Tsudanuma Campus / Mimomi Campus)
    Founded in 1952 as the Department of Industrial Management of the Faculty of Engineering. In 1965 it developed into the First Faculty of Engineering and in 1966 it was renamed the Faculty of Industrial Engineering.
  • Faculty of Engineering
    Founded in 1947 as a technical college department for engineering. In 1949 it developed into the Second Faculty of Engineering. In 1966 it renamed itself the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Faculty of Medicine
    Founded in 1925 as a medical school department. In 1937 she moved to today's campus. In 1942 it developed into the Faculty of Medicine.
  • Faculty of Dentistry (on the Surugadai campus)
    Founded in 1916 as the Tōyō School of Dentistry ( 東洋 歯 科 医 学校 , Tōyō shika igakkō ). In 1921 she became the School of Dentistry of the Nihon University Foundation ( 日本 大学 歯 科 医 学校 ). In 1952 it became the Faculty of Dentistry.
  • Faculty of Dentistry Matsudo
    Founded in 1971 as Matsudo Dental School of the Nihon University Foundation ( 日本 大学 松 戸 歯 科 大学 , Nihon daigaku Matsudo shika daigaku ). In 1976 she became the Faculty of Dentistry Matsudo.
  • Faculty of Bioresource Sciences ( College of Bioresource Sciences , in the Shōnan campus)
    Founded in 1943 as the Faculty of Agricultural Science. In 1951, the former Tokyo University of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry ( 東京 獣 医 畜産 大学 , Tōkyō jūi chikusan daigaku , founded in 1907) was merged into Nihon University. The faculty was renamed the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Science in 1952 and then the Faculty of Bioresources in 2000.
  • Faculty of Pharmacy
    Founded in 1952 as the Department of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Engineering. In 1988 it became the Faculty of Pharmacy.
  • Distance Learning Department (on Ochanomizu Campus)
