Wajima Hiroshi ( Japanese 輪 島 大 士 , actually: 輪 島 博 ; born January 11, 1948 in Nanao , Ishikawa Prefecture ; † October 8, 2018 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese sumo wrestler and the 54th yokozuna .

Wajima, former yokozuna of the amateurs in college sports, was the first grandmaster to come from university sumo. In 1970, the Tokyo graduate Nihon University decided to pursue a professional career. In 1971 he was promoted to the makuuchi division, a year later he reached the rank of Ōzeki , and in 1973, another year later, Wajima was promoted to yokozuna. In the following years he fought spectacular duels with his arch rival Kitanoumi and won a total of 14 tournaments.

In 1980 Wajima said goodbye to active sport after increasingly unsuccessful events and a final tournament victory and became the stable master of the Hanakago-beya. He had obtained authorization through the marriage of a daughter of old Hanakago-obayata. It was later found that the marriage was arranged for this reason. An attempted suicide by the wife in April 1982 resulted in a scandal. Wajima had to apologize publicly. In 1985 he lost his status again after he had abused his share or kabu as security for his sister's business and promptly had to give it to a creditor . The sumo association bought the share back, but threw Wajima out completely after he had already been demoted.

After that, Wajima followed the example of the former yokozuna Azumafuji and began a career in wrestling . He later appeared as the manager of various martial arts athletes and an American football team in Japan.
