Yoshio Sasamura

Yoshio Sasamura ( Japanese 篠 村 義夫 , Sasamura Yoshio ; * 1927 ; † before May 25, 2011 ) was a Japanese engineer and functionary.

Education and professional career

Sasamura studied engineering and shipbuilding at the University of Tokyo . He then worked as an engineer and expert for the Nippon Kaiji Kyōkai , a global classification society . In 1964 he joined the International Maritime Organization . There he was promoted to head of the Department of Oceanography within six years and later took over the management of the Department of Marine Safety. In 1987 he was finally appointed deputy general secretary of the organization. He held this position for two years. During his time at the International Maritime Organization, he played a key role in drafting numerous international agreements. He played a key role in the drafting of the International Convention on Load Lines , the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships and the fifth revision of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea from 1974. In 1989 he switched to the Japan Shipbuilding Research Association as a technical advisor . As such, he was a member of the Japanese delegation to the International Maritime Organization until 2008. From 1994 to 2007 he was also Chairman of Port State Control in Tokyo .
