Youssof Kohzad

Youssof Kohzad (* 1935 in Kabul ) is an Afghan poet , actor , artist and writer .

Life

Kohzad was born in 1935 in Chendawol, a district of Kabul . After graduating from the German Nejat-Gymnasium in Kabul, he wrote plays and performed them in the Kabul theater. Then he went to the College of Art in Rome . In 1953 he finished his artistic training there.

In 1965 he returned from Rome. He traveled with other Afghan artists to what was then the Soviet Union , India and the GDR .

  • From 1966 to 1969 he was head of fine arts in the Ministry of Art and Media in Afghanistan.
  • In 1971 he became a consultant for the Kabul theater.
  • In 1976 Kohzad became Minister of Culture.

In the same year he founded the National Gallery in Kabul. At that time the gallery owned 700 paintings, thirty of which are still in existence today. In 1992 he and his family found refuge in India while fleeing the mujahideen . He and his family later fled to the United States , where they currently live in Tracy, California .
