Yrjö Hakanen (born August 24, 1952 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician. From 1990 to 2013 he was chairman of the Communist Party of Finland (SKP). He has been a member of the Helsinki City Council since 2004.

Hakanen's political career began in the 1970s with the old Communist Party of Finland , which was founded in Moscow in 1918. He also became chairman of the socialist student union SOL and was a member of the central committee of the SKP. The old SKP disbanded around 1990, but in 1986 a split had formed with the Communist Party of Finland (Unity) (SKPy), which Hakanen also joined after being a member of the Democratic Alternative for a short time . In 1990 he succeeded Esko-Juhani Tennilä as party leader, and in 1994 the SKPy was renamed to its current name. In 2004, 2008 and 2012 Hakanen was elected to Helsinki City Council. He was able to double his number of votes in the 2008 election to 1,451, and in 2012 he received 1,622 votes. After he had announced his resignation as party leader of the SKP in early 2013, Juha-Pekka Väisänen was elected as his successor in June 2013 .
