Esko-Juhani Tennilä (born October 10, 1947 in Rovaniemi ) is a Finnish left-wing politician, currently a member of the Left Alliance . From 1975 to 2011 he was a member of the Finnish Parliament .

Tennilä was born in Rovaniemi in northern Finland and studied at the University of Tampere after finishing school . From 1966 to 1975 he worked as an editor for the newspaper Hämeen Yhteistyö . In 1975 he was elected to the Finnish Parliament for the Democratic Union of the Finnish People (SKDL). In the parliamentary elections in Finland in 1983 , he ran as an independent candidate and was re-elected. In parliament he then joined the faction of the SKDL. In 1987 he was elected to the Finnish parliament as a member of the Democratic Alternative . The Democratic Alternative emerged from the strict Marxist wing of the Communist Party of Finland (SKP) or the SKDL and achieved a total of four seats in the 1987 elections. However, Tennilä soon joined the newly formed Communist Party of Finland (Unity) (SKPy), of which he was chairman from 1989 to 1990. He resigned as chairman of the SKPy in 1990 to become a member of the Left Alliance. Within the left alliance, he received the reputation of an internal critic. In 1995 Tennilä was expelled from the parliamentary group of the left alliance when he resisted the participation of the left alliance in the rainbow coalition Paavo Lipponen from the Social Democratic Party . In 1999, however, he was reassigned to the parliamentary group.

Esko-Juhani Tennilä always tried to distinguish himself as a representative of Lapland . In the parliamentary elections in 1979, 1983, 1995 and 1999, he was the candidate with the most votes in the Lapland constituency . When he did not run again in 2011 after 36 years, the leftist alliance, which had received 0.7% fewer votes in all of Finland than in 2007, lost 6.4% in Lapland and one of the two previously held seats.

Tennilä married Leena Tuulikki Uusipaavalniemi in 1965 . The couple has two children: Arto (* 1966) and Tiina (* 1967). In addition to his work as a politician, Tennilä also writes poetry and children's books.
