Yue Minjun
Yue Minjun ( Chinese : 岳敏君, * 1962 in Daqing , Heilongjiang Province , People's Republic of China ) is a contemporary Chinese artist.
He is considered one of the leaders of the Chinese avant-garde . One of his trademarks are his "laughing faces", in which people are portrayed with disfiguring or alienated laughter. His oil paintings The Execution , The Massacre of Chios and The Pope are best known , each of which achieved a price of several million euros at an auction in London in 2007. The motif of the “smiling faces” can also be found in his watercolor paintings, sculptures and prints.
In Vancouver he created the sculpture labyrinth A-maze-ing Laughter , which was installed as part of the Vancouver International Biennale (2009–2011). Each of the 14 bronze sculptures is around 2.5 m high and weighs around 250 kg. The sculptures are in Morton Park on English Bay .
