The Zürcherisches Singinstitut was a choir school founded by Hans Georg Nägeli in 1805 , which initially operated a mixed choir. Later a children's choir and in 1808 a harp- playing daughter choir were added. In 1810, Nägeli established the world's first men's choir here .

The Singinstitut took up the idea of folk singing in the Singgesellschaft founded by Johannes Schmidlin  in Wetzikon in 1754 and led by Nägeli's father. As such, the institute (in contrast to the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin  and Berliner Liedertafel, which was founded a little earlier ), was based on the folk singing teachings of Heinrich Pestalozzi .

At the beginning about thirty people sang in a mixed choir. For this, Nägeli composed motets , round songs and chants especially ; For the children's choir, which was formed a little later, he wrote two- and three-part songs. In 1808 his first four-part male choir song Klaggesang was performed, which two years later led to the establishment of its own male choir. A year later, this appeared publicly for the first time at the conference .

The pioneering work of the Singing Institute resulted in numerous textbooks by Nägeli, including a multi-volume singing school in 1810 (together with Michael Traugott Pfeiffer ), in 1817 a singing training course for male choirs and in 1832 one for female choirs. In total, Nägeli composed over 700 songs for the singing institute's choirs.

In 1823 and 1824, Nägeli gave numerous lectures in southern German cities, which encouraged the formation of the first German choral societies. During this stay abroad, the singing institute broke up because of internal intrigues. Based on these foundations, Nägeli founded the Zurich City Choir (now the Zurich Men's Choir ) in 1826 .
